Austin Symphony Orchestra (TX) seeks CEO/Executive Director


Founded in 1911, the Austin Symphony Orchestra is Austin’s most established and enduring performing arts group. Austin is a vibrant, artistic hub with a community that cares deeply for music and the arts. The ASO offers a complete season of musical and educational programming for the citizens of Austin and Central Texas. Masterworks concerts include a series of eight concert pairs running monthly September through May in the state-of-the-art Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts. Our season also features the Sarah & Ernest Butler Pops Series featuring films with orchestra.

Our mission is to enhance the cultural quality of life for the adults and young people of Austin and Central Texas by providing excellence in music performance and educational programming. We offer programming for the entire family, including a Fourth of July Concert and fireworks show on the shores of Lady Bird Lake, the Halloween Children’s Concert, our “ASO ABOUT TOWN” chamber orchestra series, as well as the popular James C. Armstrong Youth Educations Programs, which include “Tuneful Tales” for families of young children in collaboration with the Austin Public Library, Young People’s Concerts, a High School Concert Tour and a variety of other school programs.

The ASO is governed by a Board of Trustees and is managed by a staff of 22 employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $ 6.5 million. The CEO & Executive Director (CEO) will work in close collaboration with the Board and Music Director and Conductor, Peter Bay, as well as with partner arts organizations, including the Long Center, Austin Opera, and Ballet Austin. The CEO will also work with the part-time ASO musicians, who are organized through the American Federation of Musicians.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The CEO is responsible for the management of all operations of the ASO, including, but not limited to:
    • Business development and fundraising
      Organizational management and human resources
      Financial management
      Orchestra relations
      Marketing
      Community relations
      Board engagement
      Strategic planning
  • Reports to the ASO Board of Trustees to execute its strategic growth plan and policies and will work closely with the Music Director to develop and execute the artistic and creative vision for the ASO.
  • Sets the tone for organizational operations and is responsible for formulating and carrying out policies and programs related to administrative, budgetary, staffing, fundraising, marketing, and educational activities.
  • Along with the Music Director, is a primary public representative of the Orchestra in community, patron, and donor activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

The multi-faceted responsibilities of this position call for an individual with demonstrated leadership skills and extensive management experience. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of 5 years of senior arts administration experience, most of that time with a symphony orchestra or performing arts organization
  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate studies/degree in the arts and/or nonprofit management a plus
  • Proven track record in achieving development/fundraising goals and growth, including building and managing a professional development organization
  • Experience assembling, managing, motivating, and leading effective teams to achieve program and organizational objectives
  • Ability to successfully develop and manage budgets and oversee non-profit financial management
  • Experience with orchestra administration, including working with unionized musicians, guest artists, and agents in contract negotiations and production management
  • Knowledge of and passion for orchestral music, including the music of our time and music across a wide range of periods, genres, and cultures
  • Experience with developing and executing effective marketing plans to drive both revenue and patron engagement
  • Experience in programming pops series and other genres of music with orchestra
  • A deep commitment to diversity and inclusion with experience in community outreach and engagement initiatives
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), and the ability to connect and build successful, collaborative relationships with the Board, staff, artistic personnel and volunteers to achieve the orchestra’s mission and ensure the integrity and growth of orchestra programming
  • Ability to make judgment calls and sound, ethical decisions, while often managing multiple competing demands and priorities, displaying a heightened level of responsibility, confidentiality, integrity and professionalism.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations, requiring poise, tact, and diplomacy.
