Potentially harmful microscopic plastics (microplastics) have been identified in flora, fauna, and humans (1, 2), and their volume and impact in the environment are difficult to quantify. The most effective microplastics mitigation strategy is to pinpoint their sources and prevent their release. Many industries, including textiles, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, have been linked to the release of microplastics into the environment (3–5). However, one counterintuitive source has been overlooked: the plastic recycling industry.
